Saddleback Mountain

Acrylic on Canvas Board
16" x 20"

Saddleback is a well known sight in Orange County. It's recognizable for its distinctive sloping saddle shape. In Southern California it's an iconic spot. This painting, though, has the additional feature that captures some of the whimsy of children, as they look up and see figures in the clouds. In the sequence of preparing the painting, I painted the high clouds and then proceeded to do the mountain below and finished with the lower clouds. After I finished that step, I noticed how the upper clouds form a saddled horse. It was appropriately whimsical enough to remain.

Open Sea

Artists sometimes learn to let well enough alone, usually after failing to do so at a critical time. This painting is an example of leaving well enough alone. In its complete simplicity, capturing a small moment in time that passes every second all over the world, it has a certain purity that stopped me from proceeding any further.

Arles Soldier

This painting is adapted from a statue erected in the Arles Cemetery in southern France. It is a very moving place, representing the ravages of war for ordinary soldiers.
